What to Expect at Your First Filler Appointment

Your facial structure comprises skin, muscle, bone, and fat. As you age, those structural pieces lose strength and integrity, resulting in the signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sunken cheekbones, and saggy skin.

If those visible indicators of advancing age cause you emotional distress, you’re certainly not alone. Rather than live with it, over 1 million people a year choose to rejuvenate their aging appearance with dermal fillers or simply fillers.

Fillers are cosmetic injections that can give you a glowing and more youthful complexion. However, since the procedure involves injections of foreign substances, you may be hesitant to try dermal fillers, even with their booming popularity.

At Enrich Health and Wellness in Boerne, Texas, Maria Cole, APRN, FNP-C, and our team have the training and expertise to safely and effectively administer cosmetic injections such as fillers.

Here, we walk you through what happens at your first filler appointment.

What are fillers?

Fillers are injectables that add or restore volume and fullness to the face. We inject gel-like substances into thin or sunken areas to mimic youthful structures.

At Enrich Health and Wellness, we offer fillers with various ingredients that can address a wide range of concerns. These include hyaluronic acid (Juvéderm®, Restylane®) and calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®). Our team discusses which filler is best for you.

We commonly recommend fillers to correct the following:

  • Smile lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Lip lines
  • Lack of jaw definition
  • Sunken cheekbones

Fillers can also add volume to areas that may be thin or shallow due to aging, such as your lips or hands.

How to prepare for your first filler injection

Before getting fillers, our team sits down with you to discuss your health history. We want to ensure you don’t have any allergies or medical conditions that may cause adverse reactions to filler ingredients.

We also review your aesthetic goals to make sure fillers are right for what you want.

On the day of your procedure, thoroughly cleanse your face, but don’t wear makeup.

What to expect during your first filler injection

When you come in for your appointment, our team cleans the injection site and applies a topical anesthetic to numb the area. The needle may cause mild discomfort, but you shouldn’t feel pain.

Your provider then injects the fillers into the desired areas. Depending on the number of injections, your appointment can take a few minutes to an hour.

You won’t require recovery time, so feel free to resume your daily activities afterward.

You may experience minor swelling for a few days, but after that subsides, enjoy the immediate results that fillers provide. You can get repeat injections when you notice the fillers begin to dissolve, which can happen after about six months.
